Single Premiere: Trace Italian - Straw People

Today’s single premiere is extra special for the Cups N Cakes Network. The reason we are so excited to share this track with you is because Trace Italian is the project of our very own Sean Newton. Newton has been part of our team longer than anyone (except Jeff), and does “Inside the Artists Studio” segments and also writes “Pick Of The Week” reviews.

His band, Trace Italian, are prepping the release of their debut full-length through Grade School Records. The album is set to drop on September 19th with a release show being held in Edmonton at the Sewing Machine Factory. That show will see Trace Italian playing before Victoria’s Bridal Party. (whom Sean interviewed at Sled Island 2019 and reviewed their new album)

The album is called Down In The Weeds, and it is quite eclectic. The track we are premiering today is called “Straw People”, and sets the tone right off the top for the adventure the listener will be able to experience once this incredible work is available on the 19th.

When asked about the opening track, Newton said:

"Straw People was written last summer in the midst of a spate of bad forest fires across the prairies that left much of Western Canada blanketed in smoke. It’s the song that came to best summarize the musical obsessions and lyrical fixations of the album; sampled Canadiana (Tommy Douglas in this one), puzzle-box song structures, and prairie iconography."
