MAYBEL is an impressive new country/folk act with a sound that draws inspiration from the album, Trio which was a collaborative effort between Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. Using that incredible 1987 release for inspiration, the band then adds a modern flare to their sound that makes them a breath of fresh air. The project consists of Loris Kecaj, Lauren Spear (Le Ren), Ali Hendra, and newcomer Fez Gielen. This Friday will mark the release of their debut album through Eliza Niemi’s (Mauno) new label Vain Mina.

The release, called Gathering, is a collection of ten beautiful and honest folk songs performed with lush three-part harmonies sung over sparse, haunting arrangements. It was recorded over the course of just five days spent at producer Jonas Bonnetta’s Port William Sound, and features Caylie Runciman (Boyhood) on bass and drums. Today we are pleased to be premiering the final song on the album.

The track is called “The Secret” and when asked about it, MAYBEL said:

“This song was written by Lauren and Lo, but they see it as more of a gift than anything else. As most songwriters have probably experienced, there are special moments when the tower of song will deliver unto you a fully formed creature and all you have to do is let it in. While doing a residency at Great Island Arts on ö i Kanada (Great Island, Nova Scotia), this very phenomenon happened to L & L and they greeted it with open arms. The song materialized over one sunny afternoon and the words came out as though they had already been written. It is about union with the land and what happens during the witching hour. Because there used to be an actual witch that lived on the isle, they believe that her spirit had something to do with it.”
