Single Premiere: Owen Davies - "Like A Stranger"

Owen Davies has been a Cups N Cakes favourite since he emerged in 2015 with his first EP, Small Ideas, and his first album, Mystic. Since then he has released two more albums, 2017s Janky and 2019s Lollipop Pumpkinhead, the latter was loved by CnC’s enough to make our list of the Best Albums Of 2019. Today we are very excited to announce that Owen Davies will be following up his stellar 2019 album in November with a four song EP entitled Slushy Farms.

When asked about the upcoming EP, Owen revealed some really cool information about the writing process and about the impressive collaborations found within the four songs:

Slushy Farms was recorded in my parents farmhouse in Seaview, Prince Edward Island last January. I was visiting my parents that month at their full-time home in North Rustico and would go up to the farmhouse for four day blocks of time and record and write. It's a very remote and beautiful part of the island, especially at that time of year, and there was very little to do other than work on the music and go for walks. It was a pretty productive time and I really enjoyed working in such an isolated environment. When I came back to Montreal, I was fortunate enough to get some really great players on the songs. Michael Feuerstack recorded pedal steel for all four songs. Dave Switchenko recorded saxophone for "There Is Nothing to Destroy". My good friend and collaborator, Jeff D. Elliott, who co-produced both Mystic and Lollipop Pumpkinhead, recorded the drums. I was also able to record Michael C Duguay playing accordion for "Elephant Tusks" while we were recording some music together in Kingston sometime that winter. Though, most of these collaborations were done over email as the first wave of COVID was in full swing. The songs were then mastered by Mike Rocha and my friend Isaac Vallentin made the artwork from a cell phone picture I took of the farmhouse on a sunny day.

The result is four songs I'm really really proud of. It's the first body of work I self-produced since my album Janky. There was definitely a desire to somehow reflect rural, snow-covered PEI in the music and I think that was achieved.”

Slushy Farms arrives on November 6th (pssst! That’s the first of the month… That means Bandcamp is waiving their fees on all sales done that day. Please consider purchasing this EP on November 6th) and today we are very excited to be premiering the first single entitled “Like A Stranger.”

Enjoy!
