Premiere: JP Lancaster - "Shapes In The Dark"
Kamloops artist JP Lancaster is gearing up to release his debut LP in 2021. In advance of that, he is dropping a four song EP of tracks that didn’t make the record. Backed by Jackson J Gardner on bass and Graham Jones (Yukon Blonde, Aidan Knight) on drums, the EP was recorded by Jon Anderson (Aidan Knight, Andy Shauf) and mixed by Jordan Koop (Orville Peck, Dead Soft) just after initial lockdowns in B.C. were lifted. It is slated for release on February 5th through Factotum Cassettes & Oddities and today we are pleased to be premiering a track from it called “Shapes In The Dark.”
When asked about the song, Lancaster revealed:
“There was a shooting on my block a few doors down from my house a week before we were going into the studio. The song wrote itself in a night. We didn’t rehearse it, we just talked about it while having lunch at the studio and then got it in a few takes. When we listened back it was like hearing someone else’s song. It was interesting, it felt like we were along for the ride rather than at the wheel.”
He continues:
“This was recorded in the summer, shortly after the Covid restrictions were loosened. None of us had seen friends, let alone played music with others, in months. You can hear a sense of joy in the playing, which is somewhat ironic given the song is thematically dark. Even Jon was having fun, automating the tape echo sounds on the fly during the take.”
Enjoy the song below and consider pre-ordering here. (Better yet, bookmark the site and pre-order on February 5th. On that day Bandcamp will be waiving their fees, giving 100% of music sale proceeds directly to the artists).
