Premiere: Apollo Suns - Rosie
It’s been awhile since we last checked in with Winnipeg’s Apollo Suns. The last time we covered their adventurous soundtrack themed jazz music was when we named their EP, Dawn Offerings, to our list of the “Best EPs of 2019.” At the time, Cups N Cakes writer JD Ormond said:
“Apollo Suns’ Dawn Offerings is a funky fusion of horn, synthesizer and guitar-driven instrumentals that will guide many a soul into limb flailing exuberance at the outdoor jazz festival. Watch out, you might catch an elbow from a rapturous Aunt (or two) in the fray.”
Since then, the band, headed by Ed Durocher has gone on to release eight live/session singles and a four song live EP entitled Live Under The Sun. A few weeks ago the band announced a new studio EP entitled A Relationship Of Force would be arriving on November 26th through Color Red Records. Today we are very excited to premiere the second single from that new EP.
The song is called “Rosie” and it was crafted while Durocher was on paternity leave. Looking after his newborn son kept Durocher on a schedule that saw him up late into the night. On these nights he began crafting lullaby style songs which is where “Rosie” was born.
Durocher explains further:
“I would do the night shift with my newborn son Miles from about 10pm – 4am and make sure he was okay. I would use the time, while he was sleeping, to write and practice. It was a beautiful time but also chaotic and so emotional, being a new father and watching this tiny human grow and sleep….. during the middle of these practice sessions which I called the Lullabies, I came up with Rosie (originally titled Miles) and I wanted it to have a fragile, soft vibe to it. That’s how I felt at the time.”
