Bandcamp Friday Suggestions - April
Another month has passed, that means we get another Bandcamp Friday!
If you’ve been living under a rock, since the pandemic began (and musicians were hit particularly hard by restrictions), Bandcamp has been taking the first Friday of each month and waiving their fees on all music sold that day. That means, if you purchase music from Bandcamp tomorrow (April 2nd), the artists you support will get 100% of the proceeds.
Every Thursday before Bandcamp Friday, the Cups N Cakes team comes together to offer some suggestions on acts that we think you should support. Check them out below and don’t forget the plethora of other albums, EPs, and singles on our site to check out. There is undoubtedly something for anyone/everyone.
If you’re financially able to support musicians tomorrow, please do.
Jeff’s Pick
Very excited to hear new music from Mitch Holtby who was well known in the Edmonton music scene in the late 2000s till about 2015 as “Mitchmatic”. Since moving to Montreal, he has mainly played for others or produced records. A few weeks ago, we were pleased to see the musical return of Holtby under the name “Mitch Davis”. Delicious bass licks lay the foundation for these two alt-pop gems.
Lana’s Pick
Lovely Company from Vancouver BC offers a two track EP, Sleeptalk, that’s groovy and delicious. But don’t be fooled thinking it’s short—each song is 10 mins each! Both songs are broken up into different musical sections, taking you on a diverse journey with a bedrock of jazz guitar and groovy beats.
Editor’s Note - Lana has already released one EP in 2021 but we’d like to recommend you head back to 2018 to check out her debut album.
Drew’s Pick
Black Wizard released a two song EP in tribute of and to show love for KISS and AC/DC. It is as fun and as ridiculous as it sounds.
(Editior’s Note - This release is listed as “pay what you can” but we’d like to suggest a payment of a $2.00, a buck a track.)
Noreen’s Pick
Get ready to be possessed by Poltergeist. A deadly combination of Gothic, New Wave, and 80’s Metal coming out of Red Deer, Alberta. Buy this tomorrow and you’ll be glad you brought your gothic side out to play.
Justin’s Pick
Winnipeg's Vagina Witchcraft offer a mix of hardcore and sludgy doom with their new self titled album. Kayla's razor sharp shrieks are so potent you can feel it in your veins, and there is an abundance of heavy moments scattered throughout!
Shaun’s Pick
Cosmically oriented retro-futurist minimal electronica from the bassist of stoner/psych heavies Moths and Locusts. Sounds like taking a massive bong rip before jumping in the Shaggin' Wagon to slay some Missile Command down at the local Galleria.
Editor’s Note - Shaun has more projects than we can keep up with… today we are recommending his experimental/noise project, Deathcrawl x Gojiro.
Simone’s Pick
R&B embraces hyperpop sound, think Frank Ocean but hyperpop. Check out our “Pick Of The Week” review to learn more.
Editor’s Note - Simone makes her own brand of Hyperpop under the name pseudo-antigone. She just dropped this EP. It’s “pay what you can” but we’d like to recommend a payment of $3.00.
Fel’s Pick
Montreal based neo-disco ensemble with funky vibes, perfect for the spring/summer season. This album is packed with disco beats and nostalgia-soaked bangers that will get your feet tapping and your head popping.
Editor’s Note - Fel plays in the latin fused garage band, The Spanish Flies. Check out this 2020 single.
Julie’s Pick
EDGE is the debut EP from Calgary-based soulful songstress Denise Valle, and a hella impressive debut at that. Her irresistibly catchy brand of R&B infused with throwback pop and earnest, heartfelt lyricism will no doubt put a bounce in your step — but just watch while the outro on "Circles" stops you in your tracks.
Editor’s Note - Julie is one third of The Garrys. This album was one our our favourite of 2017.
Brandon’s Pick
An experimental album featuring the lush and intricate pickings of a guitar, Quit Music Vol. 1 will take you through quite the trippy experience as these 6 psychedelic tracks caress your ears with trancelike riffs and a hearty bass. This is a great addition to your collection if you’re one free form, slow paced abstractions.
Greg’s Pick
The latest single from Witch Prophet produced by SUN SUN is a perfect compliment to the change of seasons. The descending keys sprinkled throughout sound like falling rain and add a nice thematic touch while Witch Prophet’s smooth vocals and repetitive lyrics will encourage you to step out of whatever storm you’re experiencing and shine like the sun that follows.
Editor’s Note - Greg’s band, Too Soon Monsoon, just released a lovely new single called “Be Easy”.
