Video Premiere: Wes Allen - Garden

Wes Allen has been a well known figure in the Toronto music scene for years, playing and co-writing for many well known acts (including a co-write on the 4x platinum Grammy nominated “Get You” by Daniel Caesar). Recently this incredibly gifted songwriter began stepping out on his own. He released a gorgeous track called “Garden” in late August which proved the accolades he’d garnered while working on others music were well deserved.

“Garden” boasts a 60s folk-pop aesthetic with bubbling synths, acoustic guitar flourishes, and lyrics about starting a family. When asked about the content of this lovely track which features Chester Hansen (BADBADNOTGOOD) and Eliza Niemi on backing vocals, Allen explained:

“I always kind of figured I would, but I never actually felt like: Oh man this could be it. In terms of actually starting a family… I think about it sometimes, but no-one’s rushing into anything, nor do I feel ready to do that. I wrote the song because I felt different with this person than any relationship I’d had before. Garden also touches on what it would be like to get old and die within a family and community, knowing that eventually it won’t be your world anymore, and that you’ll have to relax and trust the people around you. Finally, it’s about defending the garden, knowing that if we do this, this should come before our individual selves, and whatever happens I’ll stand with my family. It’s a serious message, but is delivered in a playful way, with playful imagery. The child at the beginning is one of my old piano students. At the time he recorded that in 2015 he was 7 years old and really concerned about whether or not he would make a good dad.”

Today we are very excited to deliver an exclusive premiere of the video for “Garden” one day before its official launch date. Inspired by directors like Wes Anderson, Allen and director Jack Harrison created a music video where Allen exists as a miniature in an enormous garden.
