Premiere: JP Lancaster & Jared Jackel's Bad Vibrations - Tourist Town
JP Lancaster and Jared Jackel's Bad Vibrations are releasing a collaborative track "Tourist Town" on September 9th and today the Cups N Cakes Network is very excited to deliver the exclusive premiere. The track arrives as a B-Side from a split vinyl release due in November. The record is the physical re-release of Jackel's early 2022 effort, Mal Casual, and the debut of Lancaster's sophomore EP Prowl.
Cups N Cakes followers may remember that Lancaster’s 2021 debut album found it’s way onto our countdown of the Best Records from that year. Also worthy of note is that Jared Jackel’s Bad Vibrations latest release was pencilled in as a “Pick Of The Week” when it was released earlier this year. The two BC artists sharing a split vinyl LP makes this release one we are highly anticipating!
While Lancaster and Jackel have shared stages in various bands since 2014, "Tourist Town" marks the first time the two artists have properly collaborated on a musical project. The pair don't necessarily share a ton of ground sonically, but both have documented how living in small suburban and rural communities makes them feel like outsiders in the Canadian music scene.
"Tourist Town" was written in the summer of 2021 when Kamloops, BC was crushed by 40+ degree weather during the heat dome, and subsequent wildfires that blanketed the town in smoke and snowed ash. "I constructed the lyrics while driving around for work," recounted Lancaster. "The sky had ominus shades of purple and orange in midday from all the smoke while ash rained down. The irony of being in an air conditioned vehicle for manageable air quality and temperature was not lost on me."
