Video premiere: Arlo Maverick - Night Shift
We are pleased to premiere the new music video by Edmonton hip-hop scene veteran Arlo Maverick. The song is the first single from his forthcoming album Blue Collar, due out on October 20th, 2023. The album focuses on issues of class, and fittingly, the first single will be available to stream everywhere this Thursday, August 31st, to celebrate Labour Day weekend.
The song is a critique of what exactly the working class has to do just to survive, and how that impacts your life outside of work. The video, co-directed and edited by Maverick and featuring emcees KazMega and Just Moe, depicts various people – a labourer, an office worker, and a janitor – grinding through a day of work. Through a succession of buoyant, march-like beats, the track mirrors the monotony of work, while Maverick delivers the bleary-eyed refrain, “Working that night shift/I just want to go home/I just want to go home/I just want to go home.” The rapper’s verses paint a picture of detachment from his personal life and exhaustion. “All of this paper I’m earning/The years of my life that I forfeit/The toll on my body’s enormous/Quit but I just can’t afford it,” Maverick raps with a moment of clarity, making a relatable work experience that much more resonant.
The video is available to stream below, in advance of it’s release on Thursday. Watch Arlo Maverick’s social media tomorrow for more information about the upcoming album.
