Video Premiere: "Umbilical Stain" - Paint Drying
Edmonton band Paint Drying are releasing their first single since the release of their 2024 LP Continuity Error. “Umbilical Stain” and its accompanying video come out everywhere tomorrow, April 11th, but we’re happy to be premiering the song and video a day early on the Cups N Cakes Network. The band is also releasing the B-side to “Umbilical Stain” on April 19th as a cassingle, with a show at Edmonton’s Blakbar to celebrate.
The song has it’s roots in the 90s, with it’s straight-ahead, hard-hitting rhythms, velcro fuzz guitar tones, and angular chord changes. There’s an undeniable slacker-rock quality to the lyrics and vocal too; the words are pretty abstract, but delivered in that sort of casual, tossed-off manner that makes it feel like there’s meaning in every surreal little image that crops up. The vocal delivery is a touch more severe than your typical Pavement track, but the laid-back, “let’s make some fuckin’ noise” attitude is there.
“Umbilical Stain” is out everywhere tomorrow, and you can check out the video below. If you’re in Edmonton, make sure not to miss Paint Drying’s cassingle release show on April 19th at Blakbar, with guests Old Mound and Chunder Buffet.
