Video premiere: Samantha Savage Smith - Wholesomely Made

We are pleased to start our coverage back up for 2024 with a premiere of the new music video from Calgary’s Samantha Savage Smith, for “Wholesomely Made”, from her 2022 record Fake Nice. Smith has been a long time favourite of the Cups N Cakes Network; she featured as a guest on our Inside the Artist’s Studio podcast, and Cups N Cakes writer Matt Budd wrote about Fake Nice for our Best Albums of 2022 feature, saying it’s an “explosion of sound and good vibes”.

The music video starts in media res, with Smith burying something while we hear police chatter in the background. What follows is a sweet first date story with a charming home video collage quality, until it takes a surreal turn a couple minutes in. The idea for the video was based around the location: the Sip N Dip Lounge in Great Falls, Montana. Smith and director Heather Saitz stayed at the attached hotel for three days while filming with co-star (and fellow Alberta songwriter) Bennett Mitchell. The location is a fittingly vibrant match for “Wholesomely Made”, with Smith’s expressive vocal melodies and co-producer Chris Dadge’s bright, sparkling choices of instrumentation.

Samantha Savage Smith is playing at Winterruption in Edmonton this Saturday at McDougall United Chuch with Helena Deland, and it just so happens that the Cups N Cakes Network is presenting that show. Tickets are still available here.
