Guest Edition #6

For the past few weeks we have been bringing in some guest writers to helm this column and fill in for Matthew Belton. We’ve been telling you this whole time that Matthew would return… sadly that will no longer be the case. We truly appreciated the time he spent as a member of our team and wish him all the best.

On a happy note, we are pleased to report that we have found a full-time replacement for Matthew. We will unveil this new writer next week. Until then, we will finish our run our guest writers with a familiar face.

Just to recap, so far, we’ve had Napalmpom vocalist, PJ Lavergne, Saskatchewan singer/songwriter, Megan Nash, Cassia Hardy of Wares, Emily Bachynski of Bad Buddy, and JP Lancaster take over the Quick Picks column.

For our final “Guest Edition” we bring in our longtime pal, Jeshaiah David. For those new to the Cups N Cakes Network, the Quick Picks column would never have existed without Jeshaiah. He began the column and ran it for two full years until we announced at the end of 2020 that he would be moving on from Cups N Cakes to focus on his many other artistic endeavours such as his work in Soul Mates and his love of building and fixing guitars.

We are very excited that we were able to cheer him out of retirement for his “Quick Picks” encore.

Bad Hoo - Splat

It has been well over a year since everything that everyone loves ceased to exist, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. This means it is time to round up the band, crack the garage door and piss off the neighbours again! Splat embodies that attitude to a ‘T’ by capturing the let it all hang out vibes that we all crave right now.

LAVAGOAT - 2 Tales of Terror

These dudes will go down in history as the greatest doom-metal bands in the history of the humble and overlooked prairie city of Saskatoon. 2 Tales of Terror is a culmination of all the years of riffing and head banging that has happily haunted all the lucky ones who have crossed their path.

StillWaves - “Regressing Times”

With just a couple of singles currently released, it is easy to get in on the ground floor with this Toronto post-punk outfit and their track “Regressing Times” is a great place to start. StillWaves fully immerses their listeners in darkness with moody melodies and themes about devolving humanity and egregious abuses of power. Does this seem too real to you? Well at least there is a beat to dance to.

INCISION - INCISION

This is the first EP from Vancouver metal-core maniacs, Incision. Since you’ve most likely never chugged down the heavy drink that they’ve set down before us, I will break it down for you. The noise that flows from these cuts is thick and it thumps!
