Edmonton’s Holly Pickering makes electronic music under the name sodium light. Her sophomore album the sweetening will arrive on July 31st. Pickering describes this effort as her take on electroacoustic art-pop; she cites Nina Keith, Makeunder, Elizabete Balčus, The Knife, Foxwarren, Factory Floor, Franz Ferdinand, Adult Jazz, and Tobacco and creative influences for the release. The many different sounds within those influences are meant to come together to surprise, delight, and fulfill the heart with each listen.

Today, the Cups N Cakes Network is happy to give you an exclusive premiere of the track "hypnagogia." Pickering was gracious enough to offer the story behind this song:

“The lyrics for this track are directly from an experience I had in early 2018 hearing Tim Hecker live at Studio Bell in Calgary. The lights were shut off the entire time, they'd closed all the doors so it became quite warm, and they had a huge projector showing massive abstract moving patterns. The darkness and warmth resulted in me fending off sleep and slipping in and out of a hypnagogic state for the majority of the show, much to my semi-awake frustration. It was a blessing in disguise, however; because of Tim Hecker's performance and the projections in front of me, I ended up having the most vivid and creative dreams. I wrote down as much of these hypnagogic dreams as I could once the show was over, and these notes became most of the lyrics for this very literally-named song.”
