Video Premiere: Nikolas L.B. - "Faux Fortune"
Primarily known as founding member and vocalist of post-punk outfit Bored Décor, Nikoals L. B. released his first complete solo effort, The Foie Gras Antithesis, in April 2020 amid pandemic lock-down. It was well received at the Cups N Cakes Headquarters, earning a “Pick Of The Week” designation and review from Alex Bennett. Today, we are very excited to be premiering the video for “Faux Fortune”, one of our favourites tracks from the album.
When asked about the song, Nikolas revealed:
“Faux Fortune is a lyrical tirade against the inherent capitalistic tendencies of western denizens and the value placed on self-made success. I'm attempting to showcase some of the quiet little hypocrisies that embed themselves in (I would argue) even the most socially critical of us.”
In regards to the video…
”The video is something of a visual realization of my own obsessive tendency to extract as much value as possible out of things. Most of the animated objects and sets in the video are just trinkets and garbage that was polluting my apartment while I was packing to move across the country in June. I needed to somehow document some of these things before abandoning them and considering the lyrically context, that sort of reduce-reuse philosophy seems to have gelled well. The text at the end of the video is effectively what it seems; cause and effect, within society or on the individual plane. Our preoccupations are what paint our reality. As long as capitalism determines our concept of fulfillment I think that fulfillment becomes further out of reach. “
