Premiere: JP Lancaster - Los Dopicos
Cups N Cakes followers will be no stranger to Kamloops artist JP Lancaster as we’ve covered him many times over the years. From the impeccable psych-pop of his old band - At Mission Dolores (2016-2019), to his 2021 debut solo album - Around Town - that we named a “Pick Of The Week”, to the countless artists we’ve covered from his Factotum CO label, it’s safe to say that Lancaster is a favourite amongst the Cups N Cakes Team. This makes todays announcement all the more fun for us!
We are very excited to announce that Lancaster will be dropping his sophomore solo album, Prowl, in early 2022 through Factotum CO and the Cups N Cakes Network gets the honour of premiering its first single, “Los Dopicos.” The track recounts a conversation between a worker and an employer, and sets the stage for the overarching concept of the album. Lancaster explains:
“I had a relative who worked on a construction site in Mexico City. He told me a story about people lining up outside of the site every day, waiting for a worker to die due to lax safety laws so they could take their job. I wanted to build a small piece of fiction around that idea. Something that is one part whodunnit, one part the cynical lens that I look at the world through.”
The track also features Yaris Paris, who co-produced and mixed the track.
“I wanted to make a deliberate effort with this project to be less precious about the music. Coming off an album where every single part obsessed over ‘this boutique mic on that vintage instrument to capture some perfect take’, I really felt over all of that. Obviously, I still wanted to get interesting sounds, but had no shame in using plugins, gridding stuff, or trusting other artists to contribute parts. I was most focussed on trying to convey the story.”
Enjoy the new song below and if in Kamloops on Friday, October 29th, catch Lancaster live at The Effie Arts Collective.
