Premiere: Midnight Peg - Maculate Conception
The funnest thing about festivals is the buzz around the shows you missed. It happens every year, at every festival… you’re at a show and a group of buds are simply beaming about a show they saw and you missed. This is how nearly half of my musical obsessions begin… word of mouth at festivals (remember that Spotify! It’s more fun to swap and share music with humans over codes). That is also how I learnt about Midnight Peg. I learnt about their insane live show (which I missed) after I ran into some pals at Purple City Music Festival in Edmonton, Alberta.
Immediately my research began and as luck would have it, not long after their show they where in touch regarding their debut album and the possibility of coverage… Heck Yes!
That brings us to the now, and a premiere of the second single from this powerhouse punk/post-hardcore band from Edmonton.
Midnight Peg formed in 2019 when Eric Neilson, a veteran guitarist and vocalist of the local punk scene, recruited vocalist Rocky (Raquel) Mann, Jeff Brannen on drums and Brian Lin on bass. For Midnight Peg, Eric paired his nostalgically emo melodies with a hardcore infused rhythm section and Rocky’s frenetic, in-your-face vocals. Simply put, this band rips.
Today we premiere the track “Maculate Conception” which the band explains:
“The song shares the story of Mary Toft, a woman in the 17th century, the dismembered rabbits she birthed, a disgraced royal surgeon and a pissed-off king. At the heart of it, it is the tragedy of a woman who, in a world that had no place for her profound, post-miscarriage pain, was driven to gruesome measures to cope.”
Enjoy the track below and look for Midnight Peg’s debut album, Horn Colic, arriving on October 15th , 2022.
