Premiere: [I Think I Love] Hockey - Sean Davis Newton

Today, we’re thrilled to premiere the newest single from Edmonton’s finest purveyor of idiosyncratic art-folk, Sean Davis Newton— who, I’m told, also moonlights as our very own Editor in Chief at Cups N Cakes. In “[I Think I Love] Hockey” (released to mark the entry of the Edmonton Oilers into the Stanley Cup final for the first time since 2006), Newton delivers us a playful, heartwarming ballad, and here his charm and sincerity as a songwriter is on full display. He skillfully interweaves the heartfelt and the melancholy as he catalogs the ups and downs of a self-professed hockey cynic turned convert, finding joy in togetherness. It’s a lot of fun, and although the single is meant to stand on its own, it makes for a fine appetizer ahead of Newton’s upcoming full length album, Bird Brain, due for release this October. With a first course this good, it’s definitely one to watch out for.

You can stream “[I Think I Love] Hockey” below, ahead of it’s wider release tomorrow, June 14th, 2024. You can catch Newton performing at River City Revival in Edmonton tonight, and keep an eye out for the first singles from his upcoming record Bird Brain coming later this summer.
