Tanika Charles, Good Fortune, k. burwash, and Older Siblings

Tanika Charles - Papillon de Nuit: The Night Butterfly

When it comes to soul, it doesn’t get much better than this. This is the third release from JUNO and Polaris nominated artist, the Toronto-based Tanika Charles. Its eleven tracks establish the record as an R&B masterpiece. It even features my favourite beat sample, the 808 cowbell in the eighth track.

Good Fortune - Good Fortune

From Toronto-based musical ensemble Good Fortune comes their self-titled album, an eleven track set of retro pop excellence. With vintage styled keys, a dreamy vocal delivery, and grooving instrumentation, this is an album providing mellow vibes you can’t help but nod your head too.

k.burwash - Holding Air

This is quite the experimental piece. From Edmonton’s k.burwash is his newest album, which takes pre-existing sounds and tones before deconstructing them into something new. As an exercise on the loss of our past, it provides a somber listening experience and an auditory journey for us to insert ourselves in.

Older Siblings - Unfinished Basement

From a basement in London, Ontario is Older Siblings. With guitar, drums, and keys, their sound is heavy and raw, similar to the sound found in many rock bands' basements. It features gritty vocal delivery, distorted guitar, and dooming licks, and if I had a musically inclined older sibling, I can only imagine this is what I would hear blasting through our house's thin walls.
