Fold Paper, VERTTIGO, Amanda Sum, and Motorists

Fold Paper - 4TO

Chell Osuntade cut his teeth playing for some of Winnipeg’s best acts in Super Duty Tough Work and JayWood. In those acts he made a name for himself and now we get the pleasure of learning he was a punk rock madman all along. The debut EP from Fold Paper is the vessel Osuntade is using to give us post-punk at another level. Cream always rises and it’s no wonder Fold Paper catapulted past a thousand other post punk bands to the top of our minds. Raw and jagged guitars crash between a juxtaposition of melodic beauty and ear piercing sonics. The tracks are urgent while still understanding the power of meditative repetitious pace. Our only negative to deliver is the sad news that this release is only four tracks long! We NEED more!

VERTTIGO - Fade Into You

Edmonton’s VERTTIGO have made a name for themselves by being an incredible live band. Mostly making appearances at festivals, they finally have given us a way to listen to them on a more frequent basis. Delivering dream-pop that draws influence from new-wave and shoegaze, this first release is an impressive statement and puts them in the running for one of the better bands leaning into the retro 80s sounds. Their four tracks aren’t yet compiled into one EP on Bandcamp but they are on other streaming services. Enjoy!

Amanda Sum - does it make me naive if i've never been part of something where i've meant more to them than they did to me?

This album is 100% not meant for me. As a 40 year old man, I find no common ground with Amanda Sum and her album of longing for love. What drew me into this release is the extreme honesty conveyed through these tracks. Over and over Sum talks about lack of confidence but to put oneself out there with such vulnerability requires more confidence than I’ve ever had in my life. I have the benefit of almost twice as much life experience to recognize that Amanda Sum is going to be a million times happier in life than the boys she sings about over these beautifully composed vignettes into her mindset about love.

Motorists - Touched By The Stuff

It’s road trip season and as such, banger tunes will be required. Be careful though when you hit play on the second album from the aptly named Toronto band Motorists. This record has all the sunny power-pop/rock n roll vibes you need in a summer album. It will get you rolling down the windows and turning off the interstate for the scenic route so that your able to hit repeat over and over on this gem while remembering that a road trip is just as much about the journey as it is about the destination.
