Premiere: Troll Dolly - Microcosms
Troll Dolly is the solo moniker of Vancouver based artist Jen Yakamovich. With vintage folk influences as a baseline, Yakamovich merges into very interesting territory by adding experimental elements like tape samples, rhythmic hymns, and murmured meditations. Primarily trained on drums and percussion, Yakamovich’s debut work, Heaven’s Mini Mart, showcases her background while amplifying it with a vast array of instruments and sounds. The EP arrives on June 23rd and the three singles released so far have us eagerly awaiting its arrival.
Today we are very excited to be premiering the video for the EPs lead off single, “Microcosms.” When asked about the song, Yakamovich explained:
“I feel like Microcosms began to take on its meaning in the production of the song. Like a lot of my writing, it’s a bit cheeky. I suppose it’s about negotiating power in creative and romantic relationships. The contrast between my deliberate slowness/yearning for something, and a more frenetic and flashy energy.”
The video was shot in the solarium at the Victoria Butterfly Gardens, as part of a one-take Super8 project that Yakamovich did with Trevor Lang (who also plays on the record). The video is meant to draw the viewer into the little microcosms they found within the gardens and insectariums.
