Melohalo, Rong, ok vancouver ok, and SoyJoy
Melohalo - The Definition
This new single from the Vancouver-based musical duo Melohalo is a melancholic pop track with lyrics comparing love to religion, addiction, and the feeling of being engulfed in flames. These intense lyrics are accentuated through the industrial sound and catchy delivery. This is a powerhouse of a group that provides a chaotic catharsis.
Rong - Würst
This Vancouver-based rock band referenced beta cucks in the first twenty, and that alone perked my ears, let alone the in-your-face vocals and punk aesthetic. With the album cover depicting a glizzy in a banana skin, this tells you that you’re in for a fun time. Patti Smith would be proud.
ok vancouver ok - POOL FIGHT
This West coast artist describes themselves as ‘no-wave’, and with their lo-fi approach and outsider aesthetic, it makes for an album with a haunting psychedelic sound. The lyrics, peaking with that juvenile indie twang, give a feeling of nostalgia throughout the album, like accessing old memories and seeing them through a new lens.
SoyJoy - sing back into me (EP)
This collection of songs from Vancouver’s SoyJoy was recorded throughout the winter. The acoustic sound and the angsty lyrics really tug on my heartstrings, especially the third track ‘we wear the ocean on our feet’. You’ll be reduced to a sobbing mess by the end of these seven songs.
